View Full Version : HP printers and CUPS on LN3 - HELP!
My desktop OS is LN3 updated to Sarge, so basically Sarge. I cannot get CUPS to print to two HP printers; specifically an HP Photosmart D 7160 and a Deskjet 930C. I have tried a variety of drivers including HPLIP and generic. Both printers are definitely working. (I.e., will print a direct test page or from a different OS/computer.) One of them will print from a Samsung driver. Gibberish admittedly - but at least it will print. (I have a Samsung installed and printed from that driver in error :-( )
HELP! Sorry to shout, but I am desperate.

Try Turbo Print. You can install it from adminmenu (if it still works) or download it. Turbo Print can coexist with CUPS.

Since it is 2 printers, it may be a problem with cupsys. But, you got some output with the wrong driver, so cupsys is probably working ok.????
Here's a couple links that might help. Are you using USB or serial?

The links "Generic instructions for: CUPS, LPD, LPRng, PPR, PDQ, no spooler"

Here is HP's site:

I am a Libranet alumnus from version 2.8, then 2.8.1 and finally 3.0. As much as I like Libranet, I would suggest that you take the plunge and switch over to Debian Etch. I have been using it since its late testing phase and it is rock solid. Easy to install, and has very good support for HP printers, it supported my HP multifunction printer out of the box with no need to install extra drivers. It even recognized the scanner portion. if you have a fast network connection, download and burn the netinstall disc and do a clean install. You will not be disappointed. Just my two cents worth.

I have just uninstalled hplip (version <1.0) on Libranet 3 and installed the latest version (2.7.6) from the HP site. Bingo! Thanks, all.
And I am also installing Etch on 2 computers - one installed as "desktop", with alterations to suit - and one installed as a minimum install and pull in what's wanted. Etch is definitely the way to go. I just need to find how to set up a cron job to run ntpdate. :-( Most other things I have been doing from the command line and Sarge repositories for some time anyway. Clock setting and printing I was still doing from the Adminmenu. Learning the CUPS URL has hardly been a major undertaking, so I am almost there. But I do like my clock kept accurate.

I just need to find how to set up a cron job to run ntpdate.I think there was a script for that, in LN3, in the /etc/init.d directory... I wonder if one could use it in a cron job.

I learned several years ago that -- when using CUPS -- if I downloaded the postscript .ppd for the LaserJet 4 from the HP website and used it *instead of* the .ppd provided by CUPS, more options were available under CUPS than when I used the CUPS-provided .ppd. In the newest version of CUPS, a Laserjet 4 postscript .ppd is *no longer* available -- only a generic postscript printer .ppd with even *fewer* options than the previously provided CUPS-provided Laserjet 4 .ppd.
My suggestion, then, for those who do a lot of postscript printing with CUPS -- install the manufacturer's version, if available.
