I'm running the latest Firefox and Thunderbird in Debian etch. Text in Firefox bookmarks and tool bars looks fine. Text in the Thunderbird sidebar and tool bar also looks fine. However, the text in Firefox rendered pages and mail in Thunderbird looks dreadful. it's fuzzy and hard to focus on. Is anyone able to advise me how to fix the problem please?

The problem is fixed in Thunderbird by using Ubuntu font settings:
Serif
serif
sans-serif
monospace

The same font settings in Firefox have not made much difference.

I would suggest that you download the free "Bitstream" and/or "Liberation" series of fonts. They were both designed to look good in Linux and they do!

I use KDE but if you can do it in Gnome or through the Ubuntu utilities:
- Set the fonts resolution to 100dpi (or 120dpi).
- Reduce the fonts size according to your screen size.
- Enjoy.

Serves many.

Andre: thanks for the tips. I have installed the Bitstream fonts and changed Firefox font settings to:

Serif
serif
sans-serif
Times

Looking better. I shall tinker a bit further. I must have gotten lazy because things worked so well in Libranet. I'll try the Liberation fonts next.

Phillip.

In Firefox (Iceweasel) you have to set it like this to use the fonts:

serif
Bitstream Vera Serif
Bitstream Vera Sans
Bitstream Vera Sans mono

Andre,

A very belated thank you for your font tips. I have set Firefox to your bitstream recommendation and all looks very nice.
