I am struggling with a seriously weird problem on a client's computer. She is running Libranet 3 and is having trouble connecting with the Internet:

All browsers will connect to Google. None will connect to anything else, even if given the IP rather than the domain name. I tried Firefox, Konqueror, Mozilla, Opera and one other, but I can't remember which, though I don't think it was Galeon. I also tried from 2 Live CDs, Knoppix (Konqueror again) and INSERT (Dillo). None was any different in this from any other.

She has two email accounts. Thunderbird can collect from one mailhost, but not the other. It connects to the mailserver all right, and says how many emails are there. It just can't succeed in downloading them.

Ping has no problems at all. I could ping any IP and any domain I tried. So the connections, settings and DNS servers are all fine.

I had been going to reinstall, and install Etch this time, but if Live CDs also have the problem, then Etch is not likely to solve anything.

I can't even think of a hardware problem that would consistently connect to Google and not to anything else. I thought of a firewall problem, but I can't find one and that idea is somewhat scotched by the fact that the problem also happens with Live CDs.

So what do I try next? All ideas, however seemingly far-fetched, most welcome.

TIA
Lisi

Have you checked with the Internet Provider? Maybe the trouble is there and all their customer have it...

My son's Windoze Computer had a very similar problem which was caused by overzealous firewall settings in ZoneAlarm. I removed the firewall and reinstalled it with default settings and the problem had gone. I can't think of anything else that might cause such restrictive internet use.

Since there are the same symtoms with live CDs, it does not look like a local setting. It is likely that the host is doing the redirect.

You could try using lynx to see what is going on:
$ lynx http://www.linuxagora.com/vbforum
and
lynx -noredir http://www.linuxagora.com/vbforum

Maybe one email account is IMAP instaed of POP
