View Full Version : NVidia curiosity
I have been running Debian 4.0 on my desktop for a couple of months. I have had a nvidia FX5200 card which has been running in VESA mode and I decided to switch to the nvidia driver. My kernel version is 2.6.18-4-486. I downloaded and installed the driver as per the instructions from nvidia and everything went fine. It works well in all regards except one.
Now, when I shutdown the box, none of the text messages appear; only the words "Signal Out of Range" show on the LCD monitor. I am using the DVI output from the video card.
When I boot up, I get all the messages just fine, but the shutdown disappearance of text seems strange. Any ideas?

jorgj: I am not sure what is causing that problem. I have just got rid of Automatix and loaded the nvidia driver using the following HowTo:

I checked that everything loaded by using these prompts from an Agora posting by bluesdog:

The only thing not showing up is the nvidia splash screen. My kernel is now 2.6.18-5-k7

A postscript to my previous post.
I had installed the nvidia driver from a terminal without quiting the xserver just to see what would happen. The 3D driver installed and worked but no splash screen.
I reinstalled the nvidia driver after quiting the xserver and this time the nvidia splash screen appeared.

I unistalled my "factory" download of the Nvidia driver and used the installation method you referenced. So nvidia is now installed using kernel 2-6-18-4. I'm still having some problems booting with the -5 kernel. I've relegated it to secondary status in the grub/menu.lst so the Updata Manager thinks it is installed and doesn't keep bugging me to upgrade. My problem with the shut down has gone away and I can see what is being turned off now. I used the legacy versions of nvidia-glx and the nvidia kernel 2.6.18-4-486. Perhaps, when I have some spare time, I'll get rid of the currently installed nvidia and start over, from the command line.
I still do not get a nvidia splash screen.
Thank you lurch, for pointing out the help reference.

I found this site which seems to have worked flawlessly for me with a recent Etch install (dist-upgrade from Libranet 2.8.1) on PIII with nvidia TNT2 M64 (legacy) card. I manually edited xorg.conf as instructed.
