I just read this post (http://arstechnica.com/journals/linux.ars/2007/08/29/ubuntu-xorg-maintainer-demonstrates-bulletproof-x) about a fail-safe X config for Ubuntu. It is fancier then the one Libranet had, but it is about 5 years late, but it is good to see this feature finally getting incorporated into another distro.
uteck, you are right. While Ubuntu has its share of detractors, and it is not my favorite distro, (Debian Etch is,) it has come a long way in a relatively short time. It has struck a good balance between ease of use ala Libranet, plus cutting edge software, with relatively good hardware support.
Off-topic, it will be interesting to see what Mepis 7.0 looks like when it comes out later this month (Sept 27th, if Warren's plans come through,) It has moved back to a Debian base and in my view, always had ease of use and good hardware support as a guiding principle.

It's interesting to see that they are now integrating AppArmor. It's the third major distribution lineage with a MAC framework. (After Fedora/RHEL/CentOS and SUSE.)

I tried kubuntu a month ago when i got broadband back --and it made life so easy that i just stuck with it. MUCH better than last time I tried ubuntu.
The ONLY flaw was it does not support terminals that can not handle unicode
--I gotta have Eterm with custom pics.
Wmaker on top of kdm and occasionally kde works flawlessly.
And then of course, as the Mepis founder/developer points out: ubuntu is a whole new OS
every time, creating problems for Mepis.
But if you leave the home directory and keep some settings its a matter of 30 minutes upgrading with the livecd.
Etch had a problem with tzdata which was a little annoying and internationalization works badly
with Scandinavian languages --that was a major annoyance, the more as this worked far better in Sarge. I guess this would be the same in Mepis, even worse as that is based on Etch - Lenny.
For laptops and older machines check out Mepis Antix, based on Dapper now and works very well but has gotten to RC1 with the mepis 7 base.
The old Dell PII machine I gave my brother worked well with PCLinuxOS. Neither ubuntu or CentOS would play nice with the hardware. That was a few months back. All he ever uses it for is web surfing.

fos, if it ain't broke don't fix it. WIth the limited number of things your brother uses his computer for, PCLOS is a perfect choice. When I tried it, it it seemed rock solid. Has a small but enthusiastic commnity supporting it. My main problem with it was my lack of enthusiasm for RPM based distros, and the limited number of applications in the Repositoriy. Two things that should not be a problem for your brother.

Anyway this is not available yet.
It will be in Gutsy.
I'll stick to Feisty for some time, that's mature and stable.
