I just used the Sun/Gnome Orca implementation on Ubuntu 7.04. It was quite functional using the text to speech and screen magnification functions concurrently. I was using the livecd version of Unbuntu so the speed was a little slow. I expect a hard drive install would have been much better.
Since grml no longer supports emacspeak and Oralux is now an inactive distribution, Ubuntu is the best Linux distribution for assisstive technology right out of the box.

PS. I have yet to try the most recent release of Debian. That is one of my next projects. Ubuntu is easy to try with its livecd.
