I was think of buying a camcorder. Panasonic PV-GS320 Mini DV
a description is here
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3123019&CatId=129

Storage Media: Secure Digital, Mini DV Video Tape, SDHC Memory Card

Computer Interface: IEEE1394, AV Out, USB 2.0 Hi-Speed (mini-B jack), S-Video Out

I assume with the USB I shouldn't need a capture card, (???)
What software is needed to edit and make video DVD?

Never done this before.

I have had good luck with Kino. I use the firewire (1394) connection from my camera, a Canon Optura, to the box.

Since there only USB is available on my box looks like the only thing other than the canera that is required is a IEEE 1394 card.

How hard are the to setup on Debian Testing?

The camcorder is here, that Panasonic PV-GS320 is one sweet machine the quality is great. Plug in a Firewire PCI card within 10 minutes I had the first movie on the HDD , not quite Oscar quality
I am now trying to decipher Kino. I have a movie on 2 - 55 minute minidv's I just can not find the right way to fit that onto a DVD. I either end up with low quality 2.4GB file or a high quality 4.9 GB file which is a tad tooooo big to burn on 1 DVD.

Get a dual-layer burner then, over 8GB can be burned then.

Great idea. Then I give this dual layer disk to friends to view.
