Anyone tested it personally? Maybe someone knows what exactly is different about it kernelwise that distinguishes it from Ubuntu?

I have the earlier version of Mepis running on my wifes computer. It has been very stable but not nearly as complete as Libranet. The LiveCD is the install disk. Extras are available if you pay a subscription fee.
I thought I would try the new version after the new release of Ubuntu is available later this month.
At least with Mepis you can try it out with a livecd.

I am extremely impressed with Mepis 6 Beta 2. I like it much more than Kubuntu. For one, it allows for using su in terminal -- that is, you don't have to rely on sudo anymore.
I find it very stable here. It's based on Kubuntu Dapper, so it's rather cutting edge. Though it seems to have a lot of package updates every day or so, I have yet to see it break anything.
I'm not sure which I like more ... CentOS 4.3 or Mepis 6 Beta 2. I will probably end up using CentOS in my office due to the less frequent update cycle, and use Mepis at home.

I've used Mepis 6 Beta 2 for the last 5 or 6 days. It is very promising! I agree with ralvy...Updates haven't broken anything yet, media plays "out of the box" or with apt-get, and there is no "sudo" which is a first-class pain in the arse in Ubuntu.
Hardware recognition is good though I had some trouble getting the screen display resolution to a respectable 1280 x 1024( there is a fix for this on the forums).
Having searched many distributions over the last few months for a replacement, this is the one that best fits the bill and I am quite happy to give this one a more lengthy trial. The final release in June could well get rid of any little niggles.

I just DLed 6.0 RC2. I'm running it now. I haven't been able to break anything and everything is working. It configured my HP Deskjet 3740 and allowed me to select the black cartridge in draft mode. This is the first Linux that I have been able to do that with.
It is pretty fast once loaded from the LiveCD. I have had good success with Mepis on my wife's computer. I'm going to upgrade when the full release is out.
Not bad.
