I think I will change providers soon, that always brings the possibility to get some hot new shiny new cell phone ... but then again, what do I want with a Windows-mobile "I-do-not-speak-with-your-OS-phone" ???

So does anyone knows some recent mobile phone-hardware that plays nicely with Linux? The cherry on the pie would be somthing that can even play ogg-files (audio) but this is no must. Bluetooth is.

Thanks in advance. Benjamin.

Have you considered a Voip mobile?

Thanks so far! I found the perfect all-in-one-phone, but I need to get quite rich for it ... :-( Palm Treo Series. Awesome gadget, awesome price (600-800$).

I keep on searching, for now I try to look for the Motorolas (RAZR) ...

I have a Razr. It is a mini usb port on the side. I only use it as a phone. Let me know if it is good for anything else!

Thanks for the link. I have a Razor V3. I just have to find a cable that will match the connector.

I have a simaler question, which cell provider has a wireless pcmcia card that plays fair with our little pinguin. For broadband internet access.

I have a simaler question, which cell provider has a wireless pcmcia card that plays fair with our little pinguin. For broadband internet access.

I use a D-Link DWL-610. Its is not the fastest but since I only need it for accessing the router and the DSL here is 3000 kbit/s it was largely enough. But before finally switching to Mepis, which detected the card right away, I had to use ndiswrapper and the Windows driver for setting up WLAN.

Ndiswrapper confgurationi s easy to do on the command line, but there is also a frontend called ndisgtk.

Hope it helps.

Disclosure: I work for Vodafone (big European cellphone operator), in the part of the company that deals with these cards. As you might expect mainstream support is for windoze, but I have done some work in a related area that has required Linux support to be sorted. So now all of Vodafone's cards available all round the world will work. We don't officially support Linux because our support organisation isn't geared up for it, but I'm working on releasing information (GPL of course) that will cover the necessary.

For European GSM networks there are several cards that work up to 384 kbps on standard 3G/UMTS and 1.8Mbps on the HSDPA enhanced 3G networks. Linux support is good, and I can give enough info to anyone who wants to use one.

For the US the only one I know of is a card that works with the EVDO network on Verizon. The card is made by Novatel (E620 is their number). It looks like a pretty standard pcmcia serial modem and I have a guy working for me who's did some preliminary testing to see how it plays with Linux. Though we couldn't check it with a real network in Europe the serial port is visible in Linux, so there shouldn't be a problem. We use another of their cards (E630) in Europe. I can post more details of how to configure if you wish.

Thanks chris_b;

Let we check with verison, they are my cell phone provider anyway. If I can get that card I'll get back with you for more info on how to configure it. Thanks.

I drive truck cross country in the US and the WIFI are few and far betwwen, and those that are don't work well because of all the trucks and trialers parked around you. So I want to use the broadband modem if I can find one that will work.
