As a public school teacher, I frequently encounter administrative roadblocks with regard to using computing resources in the classroom. Until several years ago, I had the freedom to install learning software as it was needed on my student computers. (My room is equipped with six student computers.) At one time, I even had two donated computers set up to run linux. I gave each interested student an account on the linux computers and allowed them to experiment. I'm hoping that a few of them carried the open source philosophy with them into the real world.
Now that I'm working on a master's degree, I would like to pursue the open source student computer concept again.
I would like suggestions for student / educational software that can be of use to students in primary and secondary public school environment. I am also interested in college level materials as that may also be an option in the future.
Thank you,

PS. I am aware of Edubuntu and their School Tools project but they are moving slowly and don't seem interested in outside help. The School Tools project also doesn't seem entirely open source and is closely held by the parent company. (just my observation, ymmv)
