Hi gang,

I'm thinking about buying a linux friendly printer/copier/scanner.... is there such a thing? Anybody have first hand experience with such? I'm all ears.

My HP-PSC was as close to plug and play as you can get. I configured it via CUPS, and share it on our family wireless network, so it can be used with the wife's XP laptop. Adding the printer to XP was easily done also.

I have an Epson Stylus Photo RX500 and haven't had any problems with it. I've used it to scan some slides as well as it contains a Transparency Unit which is accessible via the Gimp/QuiteInsane.

I also have a HP PSC model and it works fine with the hplip/hpoj software. It is a good sign when the hardware manufacture also writes the GPL software. :) But then you are paying a premium for the ink. Has anyone tried the printers from Kodak yet?

Ah yes, the dreaded ink delima. Don't they all use the same amount of ink per given page now days. Since my usage of a 3 in1 will be low, the Epson seems to be the one I'll look at.

If it is planned to be used as a copier and possibly more bulky printing, I'd go for a laser printer any day. They are simply cheaper for non-photo printing. E.g. the toner /drum in my HP Laserjet prints 13000 pages a pop. I am still using the same drum after 2.5 years.

I can back up the cost savings aspect of a laser printer. My Brother HL-270N cost $149 with the network interface at Office Depot. I had to replace the toner cartridge for $50 dollars after 1600 pages. The drum is rated for 12000 pages. At that point it is cheaper to buy a new machine for $149 than pay the $179 price for a new drum. Go figure. :)

I used to feed ink cartridges to HP and Epson inkjets like they were going out of style for as much as $35 each, usually several times per 500 pages.
