I saw a brief article on Slashdot that mentioned Amazon Web Services. They are now offering their network and infrastructure as a web service. It sounds like a very large integrated grid layer. It is still in the beta stage but appears very interesting. They charge for time and space as it is used. If you have an account with Amazon, you are already signed up.

When I set up an experimental "instance" I'll post back here.

I looked at their services a while back. They are too expensive compared to others, e.g. Gandi (although they are not exactly the same kind of beasts).

I'm sure you are right about their prices. The redunancy and scalability would be nice for some with substantial computing needs. Their billing method is also cumbersome. Paying for what you use does not make it predictable.

Since you can turn the services on and off at will, I will probably play with it as time permits. Now that they have static IP addressing available it might be good.
